Victoria’s Quilt Apron Pocket

A Tutorial

My Victoria’s Quilt Apron Project

My Plain ApronI purchased this apron last spring but found that even with it on, my stomach still gets wet when I’m in the kitchen working with water. I decided to add a pocket over my stomach area that would hold a regular size hand towel folded into quarters and placed inside.

The finished size of the pocket is 7 x 13 inches. I selected a matching fabric (blue). I cut the fabric 9 x 14 inches. This includes a seam allowance of inch on 3 sides and the top hem inch turn under + 1inch hem.

To make the pocket look more like it was an original part of the apron, I decided to add embroidery that would complement the existing apron fabric.

For the embroidery I selected a design from Victoria’s Quilt collection, a tile collection that fits together like a glove.

I decided to sew this design in all one color matching the background of the aprons design. I sewed 2 repeats of the block design. They fit together perfectly.

Apron Pocket with Victoria Embellishment

My Victoria ApronAt the iron, press inch under on all 4 sides of the pocket.  Along the top, fold it down another 1” and press it with the iron. Press these folds good so they will stay folded while you sew. You know the more you use the iron when you sew the better your project will turn out and it will be a lot easier to sew.

Sew along the 1” folded top hem following close to the folded edge. Pin the pocket in place. You will need to put on the apron and determine placement. Once placement is determined, pin it to the apron.

To apply the pocket stitch around the 2 sides and bottom with a straight stitch 1/16th inch from the folded edge and again inch inside of the first stitch line.

I’ve been using my apron for a while now and my tummy hasn’t gotten wet since – smiles!
