Lower Extremity and Rococo Pillows

Lower Extremity Comfort and Support Pillow

ROCOCO_100_PILLOW_17_600

This project started with my need for a firm pillow that is long enough and wide enough to support my entire left lower extremity when side lying on my right side. I need it to support my hip as well as the knee and ankle and prevent rotation of those joints.

Normally when side lying, one leg is crossed over resting on the mattress. When that occurs the pelvis/low back and hip are rotated as well as the knee and ankle. Side lying is a comfortable position for those with low back pain if positioned correctly, in other words without the rotations. I don’t have a low back problem, thank God, but I do have a hip problem.

You may have noticed that when you have a pillow between just your knees, the ankle left unsupported rotates down onto the bed and can become painful. This in turn rotates the knee which can become painful. This in turn rotates the hip, and so on. It is a domino effect. The entire extremity must be supported equally. Plus using one support device is so much easier than using several .

Plus I did not want a medical looking pillow. I wanted something decorative that I could store on top of my bed.

Thus became my lower extremity comfort and support pillow.

The Rococo Pillow

Embroidery Design Here

This pillow was not a planned project. I had digitized some embroidery designs that I love. I had already stitched one in colors but really wanted to make one dressier in all one color. The support pillow was on the sewing table waiting to be completed. That fabric appealed to me so I decided I would use it.

For this  project you need a 14-inch pillow form

Cut out an 18-inch square of the top fabric.

Use one layer medium weight cutaway stabilizer and hoop it with the fabric.

Sew the 8-inch embroidery design from The Rococo Collection or a smaller design.

After it is sewn, add a layer of fusible batting to the backside
