Petal Party

A Button Flower Series

I purchased these flower buttons at market 2010 with plans to make a project with them. But then I couldn’t think of a project to make with them. I already had too many bags that never get used.

Recently I returned to crocheting - my favorite crafty thing to do - and discovered I didn’t have a bag appropriate for my current crochet project. Storing a crochet project to be done later can be most any bag it will all fit into. But one that is functional to use while making a crochet project is a whole different necessity.

I have been using my Hawaiian Juiced bag and although it is large enough to hold everything, it isn’t “functional” for crocheting. So I drew out a rough draft of what I need along with measurements. Hopefully, I will get it made - not just the bag but a pattern I can share with you.

Looking at the Hawaiian Juiced bag, the embroidery is so beautiful I wondered what I would put on this bag. Remembering the buttons I went to work making these designs to put onto one side of it. I purchased these buttons from Buttons.com

My Petal Party on Blue, avec buttonieres

This is side one of my crochet bag. Some of my buttons are transparent. Their colors were lost on this batik fabric. Not a problem. I made round backgrounds for them. They are filled with various stitch types dense enough to allow the color of the buttons show without being bullet proof. I used thread colors a little  lighter than the buttons themselves. In this way the buttons show up better against the lighter thread.

Any beautiful buttons work well!! They do not need to be florals. I found several in my button collection and can’t wait to put them with some of these designs. So get out your buttons - old or new - and start planning your project.

Just in the off chance you don’t want to add buttons or at least not to all of the flowers, I added some flower petals and centers so you can sew them instead of using buttons as seen in the following picture.

Alternatively you can put buttons on some of them but sew the petals  on the remaining ones.  Have fun with these!

My Petal Party on white, san buttonnieres

These buttons have been in my mother’s button box for as long as I can remember. I re-discovered them when going through my buttons for this collection. When I saw them I knew I had to make something with them for my niece. She loves red and is an avid sewist, quilter, and embroiderer. This is the result. I had so much fun making this.

Some of the flowers have buttons and some not.
The yellow button is not a button - can you guess what it is?

I divided the designs up into sections not only for smaller hoops but edited to give you more leeway in using them.

I edited some of them to be smaller for smaller projects. I find an 8 inch tall design to be larger than I wanted for garments.

I know  you will find many uses for these designs. I would love to put them around the bottom of an apron or jacket/vest. Maybe I’ll get to it before another 7 years has passed. smiles

A little something for me.
